8:44 am - A plush.
This is the last post I'll make here. From now on you can find me over at [info]squeaky_queen, where I have also posted this.

I thought I'd share pics of a little plush guy I made a night or so ago. He's about 7" tall (not including ears):

There's a close-up of his face under the cut....

11:00 am - Changing Journals
I think I'm going to consolidate into one Livejournal.

If you're interested in continuing to read my ramblings, please add [info]squeaky_queen to your friends list. I'll leave this one intact, but from now on I'd like to just update one. I'm not really doing much deep personal reflection on here, and would like a central place to post my artwork, inspirations, musings, and soap news.

I'll friend everybody from that one, so I'm not abandoning you :)

Thanks!

10:15 am - fuzzy wuzzy
So, at the company I work for (which is the home of the Care Bears), we're having a charity auction of fifty custom vinyl "Grumpy Bear" toys. I forgot to take a picture of the blank vinyl bear (it's like a Qee, but is very definitely Care Bear-shaped*) and about 8" tall.

Here is my custom:

The claws and faceplate are painted sculpey which have been partially silver-leafed. The body is entirely covered in gray monster fur, and trimming the fur was like shearing a cat. You can't imagine how many individual fibers come off of fake fur when you're giving it a haircut.

Here are more bears, at the show's blog:

* you can see a picture of the original Grumpy Vinyl, designed by Saxton Moore, at the very first post of the Grumpy Blog.

3:02 pm - fawning over myself.

Now I know who eats my garden plants and tips over my birdfeeder at night.

Jon and I went to a friend's house and shot a video for one of the songs off the Telegraph EP. I think Jon's planning to release a DVD collection of performances and videos sometime in the next year. I think this one will turn out very nicely...I'm a big pessimist because no matter how good a concept you've got, I think it still looks like crap unless you shoot it on actual film, but this one could prove me wrong - it's a great idea.

I am certainly NOT a team player and I hate working toward other people's goals and making them richer while I stay at the same financial level. I am not fit for corporate america. Which sucks, because I cannot possibly support our mortgate with my own business. At least not now. I am trying to figure out wholesaling - anybody who wants to hold my hand and help me figure it all out is a saint...it's difficult for sure.

I'm vending at Craftin' Outlaws in Columbus this year (craftinoutlaws.com) on October 7, and just turned in my application for Handmade Arcade in Pittsburgh on November 11. I was there last year so I don't doubt I'll be there again. I'm going to try for the Cleveland Bizarre Bazaar again this year and if they lose my application this year I'm not going to try again anymore.

This is going to be a busy time from here on out, I'm enjoying the lazy days of August because they're so few and far between in the fall.

4:29 pm - unsolicited advice
I really hate it when people feel the need to give their opinion when you haven't asked them for it.

I'm more an MYOB kind of girl, I guess.

2:53 pm - Chocolate Review: Dagoba
Chocolate Review: Dagoba Eclipse 87%
Three dollars, grocery store.

Let me say that right off the bat, I find the texture of this chocolate to be just terrible. No smoothness, no richness, just a bunch of tiny chocolate particulates trapped in a substrate that disappears in the mouth, leaving my throat a little choked and thick. It's gritty, and I don't think it's on purpose.

Taste-wise, it's not bad. Not the best I've had, but not too bad. The first time I had it, it was after a meal of sushi, which left me with an almost pine-like herbal impression in the chocolate. Now that I'm eating a second piece with no food for a few hours, I do find it better. The sweetness level is quite appropriate for an 87%, and the familiar cocoa taste has that definite dark-chocolate tang.

Regretfully, that's it. No nutty, coffee, fruit, or caramel tones. Basically folks, this is just boring chocolate with a mediocre texture. Yeah, I'll finish the bar, but I won't be buying another. I was intrigued by their "single origin" chocolate series, but if they're all going to have that powdery mouthfeel, I can do without them.

4:01 pm - ear musings
I started stretching my earlobes when I was about 16 or 17. You'd think that after a decade, I'd be wearing dinner plates in them or something, but I just decided to stop once I got to a certain size. I don't know why body modifications are so addictive, but you truly do want more/bigger the more you have.

Anyway, this is totally vapid and unimportant to the world, but I just wanted to say how happy I am at a 4 gauge. It's the size where you can start to get more interesting materials, like glass and stone or shell, but can still wear big things like spirals and hoops without them hanging heavily down to your shoulders, even steel ones. It's completely noticeable that what is going through your ear is way bigger than "normal" earrings. Plugs look dainty and understated, but that can be a boon when going to a funeral or needing to look "respectable".

Oh, and Ear Smell is kept to a minimum.

4g seems to be a bit of a "lost" size, though - I often see tons of 6g and 2g for sale places, but a lot of times that 4 is just missing from their inventory, strangely.

I just splurged and ordered 4 pairs of gorgeous spirals made of semi-precious stones on pre-order. They'll take an eon to get to me, but they're far less expensive than retail, so I can actually use my birthday money wisely.

So, thank you 4g for being my perfect size, and thank you personal, obsessive craving for letting me stop there and not feel the need to shove wine corks through my lobes.

Back to your regularly scheduled, important philisophical musings :)

9:22 am - Marzey Doats
I love trash day.

The people in my neighborhood throw away stuff that is in *perfect* condition. In one way it's great because folks like me can stop on their way to work and get free things (and I see lots doing this, it's no secretive operation), but at the same time, cripes people - ever hear of thrift stores? You know, places you take your old crap so people like me can buy it for cheap and the money goes to help mentally disabled people get jobs? I see these houses with thier garages full of minivans and Lexus cars and they're just constantly throwing away perfectly good stuff. How much stuff are they buying in the first place? We always have one of the smallest garbage piles on the street. I don't understand it.

Anyway, I scored some fabulous flowerpots this morning. Probably $60 worth - all sizes, some glazed/enamelled, one huge one, including the saucers and some trivets. And a bonus birdfeeder that was hiding in the large pot. All terra cotta or glazed ceramic. No plastic.

SCORE.

9:46 am - crap.
Our bathroom is falling apart.

We've painted the walls and ceilings a nice gleaming white and cleaned all the metal fixtures with steel wool, also spraypainting white the plastic part of the fan that didn't bleach out well, so it's lookng pretty good.

Until we started in on the tub.

You know that plastic tape-stuff that you can buy to hide the caulk-line between the tub and wall if you think it's ugly? Yeah, well the previous owners decided to use that INSTEAD OF caulk/grout so you can just imagine the mildewy damage we found when we peeled that stuff off. And after noticing a HUGE gap between the top of the tub and the tile, we also realized that lo and behold, the tile was just starting to fall off the wall. On one wall, the adhesive is just old and the tile is falling off. On the other wall (the one where the waterworks are), behind the tile, we found nothing but an oozing, seeping, crawling, peeling, powdery, soft black substance. Definitely not backerboard, what could it be? Oh, it's PLYWOOD. They used plywood behind a shower with no moisture barrier. Brilliant, people, just effing genius. If you stand in the tub you can see the floor of the closet in the next room through the wood. Nice.

I'm so tired of going to fix/update something and finding Previous Owners' half-assed, 25 cent "repairs" that just make it near impossible to deal with. There should be a homeowner's correspondence course before you're allowed to buy a house.

Luckily we've got a contractor coming in this week to look over it. Jon talked to him already and he said it sounds like we'll have to remove the tub to fix the floor. Our tub is enamelled iron, so that's going to be a huge pain.

Urgh. Home ownership is awesome.

But on the good side, I found a yellow toilet on the side of the road, in perfect condition, that matches our bathroom tile EXACTLY. So we'll no longer have a two-color toilet, but a one-color one. So it's not all bad news.

9:34 am - Travelogue show...
Hey Cincinnati people,

Jon and I are playing Rohs Street Cafe this Saturday night. It's five bucks.

Come cheer me up because I certainly do not look forward to driving five hours to play a 35 minute set. On what could have possibly been a glorious 3-day stretch of uninterrupted weekend. Yes, I'm bitter about it.

9:14 am - yet again...
Ah, another Hollywood remake of a J-horror film.

Kaïro/Pulse was really good the way it was. Call me a snob, but I don't think it should be given the "Grudge" treatment. That film had a lot to say, it wasn't just about scary-scary.

Oh well.

Birds that have visited my feeders so far this season:

• White Breasted Nuthatch
• Tufted Titmouse
• Chipping Sparrow
• Purple Finch
• House Sparrow
• Red-Bellied Woodpecker
• American Goldfinch
• Brown-Headed Cowbird

• Blue Jay

I am still hoping to see:

We'll see. I'm improving my feeding strategy soon and hopefully will attract a wider diversity of species.
